Central Georgia Tornado Recovery Fund

The Central Georgia Tornado Recovery Fund was established by The Community Foundation of Central Georgia and United Way of Central Georgia to assist the victims of the May 11 Tornado with their long-term recovery needs, unmet through insurance and FEMA.  Each organization has already committed $25,000 to the Fund, and BB&T and BB&T Insurance have also contributed $25,000.

If you are looking to donate to the Fund, please make your check payable to the Central Georgia Tornado Recovery Fund, and mail to United Way of Central Georgia, P.O. Box 1302, Macon, GA  31202.  You can also make credit card donations by logging on to www.unitedwaycg.com or by calling the United Way office at 745-4732, ext. 0. In addition, several local banks have joined in the effort and are accepting contributions on the Fund’s behalf, including Atlantic Southern Bank and Colonial Bank.  All contributions are tax deductible.

If you are looking for assistance, you must first register with FEMA (the Red Cross is offering assistance with this process - 743-8671).  Also, contact your insurance company or landlord immediately.  There is also assistance available through small business loans.  Immediate assistance with food, shelter, clothing, and medical needs, can be directed to several local social service agencies, including the Central Georgia Chapter of the Red Cross, The Salvation Army, Volunteer Macon, Middle Georgia Community Food Bank, and United Way 2-1-1.

United Way of Central Georgia is serving as the fiscal agent for the Fund.  Representatives from United Way, CFCG, and other community leaders will serve on a committee that will oversee the distribution of funds to assist the tornado victims. This will be part of a greater effort called a Long Term Recovery Committee (LTRC).  The LTRC will have representatives from social service agencies, faith-based groups, agencies, and organizations that commonly provide resources during response and recovery.   100% of the funds raised will be spent to meet the recovery needs of the tornado victims.  United Way will cover all administrative costs from their emergency reserves.

Over 1,500 homes in Central Georgia were affected by the tornados.  Just over 100 homes were complete destroyed.  Join together with countless community partners to help those in need through the Central Georgia Tornado Recovery Fund.  Please call the Community Foundation with any questions – 750-9338.
